CALGARY, Alta. – Hockey Canada announced the additions of Liam Foudy (Scarborough, Ont./London, OHL), Markus Phillips (Vaughan, Ont./Owen Sound, OHL) and Akil Thomas (Toronto, Ont./Niagara, OHL) to Canada’s roster for the Sport Chek World Junior Showcase, July 28-Aug. 4 in Kamloops, B.C..
The players replace forwards Jordy Bellerive (North Vancouver, B.C./Lethbridge, WHL) and Robert Thomas (Aurora, Ont./Hamilton, OHL), and defenceman Josh Brook (Roblin, Man./Moose Jaw, WHL), who are unable to participate due to injury.
Thomas is a 2018 second-round NHL draft pick of the Los Angeles Kings. He won a gold medal with Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team at the 2017 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup, and represented Team Canada White at the 2016 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. Thomas also wore the red-and-white at the 2017 and 2018 IIHF U18 World Championship.
The Sport Chek World Junior Showcase is an eight-day tournament featuring Canada, Finland, Sweden, and the United States, who will play 11 games at the Sandman Centre. Canada will dress two squads for games against a split Team USA on July 31, before combining again as Team Canada to play Finland on Aug. 2, Sweden on Aug. 3, and close the mini-tournament against the United States on Aug. 4.
