GAME RECAP | ‘Dogs pick up point in 6-5 OT loss to Storm

The Niagara IceDogs picked up a point in tonight’s 6-5 overtime loss against the Guelph Storm. Tonight’s game was the ‘Dogs only home game against the Storm this season, which featured 18 NHL drafted players and nine on each team’s roster.

In the first period, Guelph got the first in the net to kick off the scoring. In his return, Kyen Sopa scored on the powerplay to tie it up for the ‘Dogs! Akil Thomas passed it to Phil Tomasino, who skated to the edge of the face-off circle. Tomasino then sent it to Sopa, who scored from the top of the slot! Guelph scored a few minutes before the end of the period to regain the lead 2-1.

The second period saw some back and forth goals. Guelph scored within the first minute to increase their lead to 3-1, but the ‘Dogs scored less than two minutes after that to cut it to 3-2! Kirill Maksimov scored straight through the slot, assisted by Ben Jones and Thomas. Guelph answered to make it 4-2, and the ‘Dogs cut it back down to 4-3. Jones sent a pass behind to Jacob Paquette, who skate it close to the boards and sent it back through the faceoff circle to Jones in the slot who directed it right into the net.

In the third period, Paquette sent a pass from the point to Oliver Castleman in front of the net, who then scored! The secondary assist was credited to Sopa. Jones scored in a scramble in front of the net later on in the period to make it 5-4 ‘Dogs. Jake Studnicka, with his first point and assist as an IceDog, and Jason Robertson were credited with the assists. With his assist, Jason Robertson extended his point streak to 17 consecutive games. Guelph tied the game at 5-5 with six seconds left, forcing an overtime period.

During the overtime period, Guelph scored a couple minutes in to take the 6-5 win.

Tomasino got one assist in his 100th regular season OHL game tonight.
