GAME RECAP: IceDogs Defeat Otters 5-4 in Shootout!

The ‘Dogs were home tonight, as they hosted the Erie Otters for the final time this season. Looking to bounce back after the tough defeat to Kingston on Sunday, the IceDogs came out hungry for a bounce back game. Tonight featured a few team milestones as Sam Miletic played in his first IceDogs game, and Jonathon Schaefer and Akil Thomas played in their 100th OHL regular season games.

Despite dropping the first goal to Erie early in the 1st period, the ‘Dogs bounced back quickly with two back to back goals. First, Ben Jones got things going, tapping a pass from Matt Philip into an open net. Elijah Roberts picked up the secondary assist on Jonesy’s goal. Then, Drew Hunter scored his 2nd of 2018, staying persistent in the offensive zone and capitalizing on an Otters miscue. Sam Miletic picked up his first point as a ‘Dog with an assist on Hunter’s goal. Akil Thomas was credited with the other assist. The 2-1 score held until midway through the second period when the Otters tied the game at 2. The Otters scored two unanswered goals late in the 2nd period to carry a 4-2 lead into the 3rd period.

The third period started with both teams exchanging chances back and forth. But the 4-2 score wouldn’t hold for long. Danial Singer errantly shot the puck from the blueline before heading off for a line change, and with a few wild bounces, the puck found its way into the net! Singer’s 20th goal of the season was assisted by Sam Miletic and Liam Ham. Then, just minutes later, Sam Miletic found his name into the goal column as he tied the game! Liam Ham picked up his 2nd assist of the game with an assist on Miletic’s first as a ‘Dog. Danial Singer was credited with the secondary assist. The game took a rough turn, but neither team could score on their respective man-advantages.

This game went the extra mile after we ended regulation and overtime tied 4-4. Sam Miletic and Akil Thomas scored while Stephen Dhillon made 2/3 saves to give the ‘Dogs the 5-4 win!
