GAMEDAY PREVIEW: IceDogs begin Michigan weekend in Flint

The Niagara IceDogs are back in action tonight as they visit the Flint Firebirds to kick off their annual Michigan road trip. This will be the first of two games between these two teams, and the only time the IceDogs visit the Firebirds on the road this season. Last season, the ‘Dogs split the season series against Flint. The ‘Dogs are coming into this game riding a three-game win streak after commanding wins against the 67s, Steelheads and Otters.

The IceDogs’ penalty kill has been a major factor, being 84% effective, thus far, which ranks them 3rd in the league. Ben Jones and Kirill Maksimov each lead the team with 8 powerplay goals, while Akil Thomas ranks third in league powerplay assists, with 13.  Stephen Dhillon ranks tied for 4th in the league with 12 wins on the season. Maksimov scored his, team-leading, 15th goal against the Otters on Thursday as he continues to impress just a year removed from his draft year. Coming off a 3-assist game on Thursday, Ben Jones’ play with and away from the puck remains to be a focal point of the ‘Dogs, especially with the great passes he’s been making to set the team up for goals. Bradey Johnson has also found his groove, scoring 4 goals in 2 game and looking for more!

The IceDogs have received secondary scoring from second year forwards Danial Singer, Matthew Philip and Oliver Castleman, and the rookies. While the defensemen have become more active in the offensive zone, especially with the activation of Liam Ham and Justin MacPherson when the ‘Dogs have extended control of the puck in the opposition’s zone.

IceDogs’ Top 5 Point Leaders:

Points Goals Assists
Kirill Maksimov 27 15 12
Ben Jones 26 11 15
Akil Thomas 26 6 20
Danial Singer 18 8 10
