GAMEDAY PREVIEW: IceDogs close out Michigan road-swing in Saginaw this evening

The Niagara IceDogs are back in action this evening as they visit the Saginaw Spirit to close out their Michigan road trip. This will be the first of two games between these two teams, and the only time the IceDogs visit the Spirit on the road this season. Last season, the ‘Dogs split the season series against Flint. The ‘Dogs are coming into this game riding a four-game win streak after commanding wins against the 67s, Steelheads, Otters, and Firebirds.

The IceDogs’ penalty kill has been a major factor, being 84% effective, thus far, which ranks them 3rd in the league. Ben Jones and Kirill Maksimov each lead the team with 8 powerplay goals, and are tied for 2nd in the league. While Akil Thomas ranks fourth in league powerplay assists, with 13.  Stephen Dhillon ranks tied for 4th in the league with 13 wins on the season.

Ben Jones played in his 150th OHL regular season game last night in Flint, and he did not disappoint. Despite only appearing on the scorecard once at the end of the night, Jones’ play without the puck continues to improve and is a major factor in the teams’ success as of late. Bradey Johnson has also found his groove, scoring 6 goals in 3 games, which has rounded out the teams’ scoring depth even further down the lineup.

The IceDogs have received other secondary scoring from second year forwards Danial Singer, Matthew Philip and Oliver Castleman, and the rookies. While the defensemen have become more active in the offensive zone, especially with the activation of Billy Constantinou, Liam Ham and Justin MacPherson when the ‘Dogs have extended control of the puck in the opposition’s zone.

IceDogs’ Top 5 Point Leaders:

Points Goals Assists
Kirill Maksimov 27 15 12
Ben Jones 27 11 16
