GAMEDAY PREVIEW | IceDogs host Battalion tonight to close out 3 in 3
The Niagara IceDogs are back home tonight to host the North Bay Battalion, as they close out their 3 in 3 weekend. This evening’s game marks the final time these two teams will face each other this season. The season series between the Central Division rivals sits 3-2, in favour of the ‘Dogs. In their most recent matchup, the Battalion came out on a top following an eight-round shootout. Coming into this game, North Bay has three wins in the past five games.
The Battalion and IceDogs are currently tied with 63 points on the season, with nearly identical records. So tonight’s game will be extremely meaningful, in terms of the standings.
This season, the Battalion are lead on the scoresheet by Justin Brazeau (67pts), and Luke Burghardt (64 pts). Despite not playing many high scoring games, the Battalion’s defensive play is stellar and causes the other teams’ top players frustration – a style of play the ‘Dogs will need to need to stop themselves from falling into, to be successful. After dominating in shots last night, and being stagnated by a strong goalie, the ‘Dogs will need to continue following their game plan against a team they’ve seen frequently this season.
The ‘Dogs are being led on the scoresheet by Sam Miletic, whose 79 points on the season sits atop team scoring stats, and 5th in the league. Of Miletic’s 79 points, 49 are assists, which also ranks among the most in the league this season. Akil Thomas, who ranks second in team assists, with 48 on the season, collected 21 assists on the powerplay. Miletic and Maksimov are tied for most goals on the team, each with 30. Kirill’s insurance goal Thursday night, to make it 3-1, added to his lead amongst the top in the league with 6 insurance goals on the season.
The ‘Dogs 5th ranked penalty kill will be facing the Battalion’s 12th best powerplay, in the league, tonight. The Battalions’ Brazeau is third in the league with 14 powerplay goals this season. However, the ‘Dogs will be facing the leagues’ 8th rank penalty killing units from North Bay, so their powerplay could find an opportunity to be sparked again.
