Akil Thomas became a member of the LA Kings, after being selected by LA in the second round (51st overall) on Saturday, June 23rd.
IceDogs General Manager, Joey Burke praised Thomas for his work ethic, determination and leadership qualities that have blossomed over his two seasons with the IceDogs. “No one is more deserving than Akil. It’s a great testament to his tremendous work ethic, talent and demeanour. He is elite in every aspect of his on-ice game and is a true competitor. [He] carries himself as a professional off the ice already. Couldn’t be prouder of Akil. LA has got themselves a steal in the second round!”
Thomas was selected by the Kings after the 5’11 , 176lb centre/winger put up 22 goals and 59 assists, for 81 points this past season. The second-year forward played consistent top line minutes while being a staple on the top power-play unit. In his rookie season, Thomas set a franchise record for points collected by a rookie, with 48. He also finished second in team scoring this season, only behind Sam Miletic.
Like all players achieving personal career goals, Thomas is incredibly excited to continue working to pursue this achievement in his career. “It’s an honour to be drafted to a first-class class organization that has been one of my favourite teams growing up. Just so happens the west coast is a place I’ve never really been so I’m so excited to experience a new place as well.”
The Niagara IceDogs would like to congratulate Akil on this significant accomplishment in his career!
