OHL PLAYOFFS | Eastern Conference Quarter-Final Preview
Eastern Conference – Quarter-Final Series
Niagara and Oshawa met twice during the regular season, with the season series ending in October. Each team won a game in extra time, an overtime win for the ‘Dogs and a shootout win for the Generals.
In the two games, Danial Singer scored two goals and finished with 4 points, while rookie Philip Tomasino had three assists, leading the IceDogs. Kyle MacLean led Oshawa with one goal and two assists, three total points.
This series will likely become a matchup of special teams. The ‘Dogs powerplay finished 12th overall, while the penalty kill ranked 8th. The Generals’ powerplay ranked 14th to end the season, and their penalty kill ranked 18th in the league.
The matchup between the pipes, as always, will be key to our success. It is expected that it will become a battle Stevie Dhillon and Kyle Keyser. Dhillon, who finished the season with 28-16-4-3 record, had a 3.34 GAA, and a 0.899 save percentage, in 63 games. Meanwhile, Keyser finished with a 3.16 goals against average and a 0.904 save percentage in 47 games played, and a record of 28-13-2-0.
The goaltenders will be tested strongly by each teams’ leading scorers. Four IceDogs finished in the leagues’ top 20 total points this season. After being acquired from London, Sam Miletic finished the season with a career-best 36G , 56A (92 points). Meanwhile, Akil Thomas finished with 81 points (22G, 59A), Kirill Maksimov more than doubled his point totals from last season, with 80 (34G, 46A), and Ben Jones collected a career-high 79 points (30G, 49A). Jones collected 7 more points than the Generals’ leading scorer Jack Studnicka. The Generals’ captain, posted a career-best 72 points (22G, 50A).
Both teams were strong heading down the stretch as Oshawa went 7-3-0-0 in their last ten games while Niagara went 8-1-1-0. This matchup features two very close teams, who finished the season with similar records.
