GAME RECAP | IceDogs return home from Peterborough with two points

The ‘Dogs capped off the Family Day long weekend this afternoon with a visit to Peterborough. Stephen Dhillon got the nod between the pipes against the Petes.

Despite being in the same conference, these two teams haven’t played each other since October, when Stephen Dhillon got his 1st shutout of the season at home. Understandably, the first few minutes of the period were a feeling out period for the ‘Dogs against a Petes team they haven’t faced since acquiring some key players. Daniel Bukac broke the goose-egg by beating the Peterborough goaltender high glove side with a shot from the blueline. Just over a minute later, Ben Jones redirected a pass from Matt Philip to give the IceDogs a 2-goal lead. The Petes added a power play goal of their own, but the IceDogs bounced right back with two additional goals from Philip Tomasino and Jason Robertson! The ‘Dogs dominated the first period, with most of the play being held in the Petes’ zone. Niagara outshot Peterborough 15-6 and carried a 4-1 lead into the 2nd period.

Philip Tomasino scored his 2nd of the goal on a partial breakaway in the opening minutes of the second period. The Petes started to push back, but the IceDogs held their ground, and blocking shots before they get to Stevie. In the final seconds of the period, Dhillon made an excellent save to maintain the 5-1 lead going into the final frame.

Peterborough added a goal in the third period to cut the Niagara lead to 3, but the ‘Dogs prevented them from scoring any more goals!

With his first period goal, Jason Robertson extended his point-streak to 15 games!

With his win this afternoon, goaltender Stephen Dhillon is now one win away from tying Mark Visentin for 89 wins, the Niagara IceDogs franchise record!

The ‘Dogs return to home on Thursday February 21st against the Kitchener Rangers. A second match-up against Peterborough happens on Saturday February 23rd, this time at home.
