GAME RECAP | Sbaraglia picks up first OHL win with 5-1 defeat over Bulldogs

The Niagara IceDogs travelled down the QEW this afternoon for a Sunday matinee against the Hamilton Bulldogs. After the Bulldogs evened the score of the K-9 Cup Challenge last weekend, the IceDogs were looking to continue the success they’ve had thus far in the weekend; coming off of wins Thursday (6-1 vs Owen Sound) and Friday (7-2 vs Kitchener). Christian Sbaraglia made his return to the IceDogs net for this afternoon’s game.

Kirill Maksimov picked up where he left off of Friday against the Rangers, pouncing on a loose puck behind the Bulldogs’ netminder to steal a 1-0 lead on the powerplay! Ivan Lodnia fed Robertson from the point, who got the puck around a sprawling goalie to find Maksimov waiting at the side of the net. Makismov scored his 17th of the season, and 9th powerplay goal of the season. In the final five minutes of the period, Ivan Lodnia went streaking into the offensive zone with two Bulldogs’ defencemen trailing closely behind. Lodnia was hooked from behind. Rather than calling a penalty on the play, Ivan was awarded a penalty shot. Ivan scored five-hole on the Hamilton goaltender to double the IceDogs’ lead to 2 heading into the first intermission!

The second period was filled with back and forth play. Each team found themselves in the penalty box during this period, but the IceDogs’ penalty kill pulled through to maintain the score. In the final half of the period, Jason Robertson added his league leading 27th goal to extend our lead to three! With Jason’s tally, he extended his point streak to 13 games. Philip Tomasino was credited with the assist on the 3-0 marker.

The Bulldogs got on the board less than a minute into the period, but the IceDogs’ offence came right back to re-gain the 3-goal lead. Bradey Johnson lead a charge into the offensive zone with Oliver Castleman and Matt Philip. Castleman made a great move to find Bradey who danced out in front of the Bulldogs’ net and picked up his own rebound to take the 4-1 lead! Then, right off the face off dot, as he did on Friday in Kitchener, Kirill Maksimov took advantage of a Ben Jones face off win, beating the goal high glove side! Maksimov’s 18th of the season extended the IceDogs’ lead to 5-1.

The IceDogs held on to take this one 5-1, giving Christian Sbaraglia his first career OHL win!
