IceDogs drop final road game in Barrie

BARRIE, ON – The IceDogs travelled up to Simcoe County today to take on the Barrie Colts for Niagara’s last road game of the season. Waddick, Podolioukh, Lavoie and He were the IceDogs goal scorers in the 11-4 loss.

Starting Goaltenders: Josh Rosenzweig (NIAG), Anson Thornton (BAR)

The contest’s first goal went to the Colts as they opened the scoring at 6:18 in. Two more Colts goals at 12:19 and 13:25 would put the IceDogs down 3-0. At 15:38 Declan Waddick capitalized on a 2-on-1 rush with a perfect pass from Andrew LeBlanc to put the IceDogs on the board. One more from Barrie would mark 4-1 after the first 20 minutes of play. Shots read 15-11 in favour of the home team.

The second period ran out in a similar fashion as Barrie added 3 more in the first half. The IceDogs made a goalie swap just before the 5-minute mark as Owen Flores came in relief. It took one more Colts goal until the IceDogs could get on the board. Andrew Vermeulen dished it off to Michael Podolioukh who stepped in over the blue line and beat the Colts netminder with a heavy wrist shot. Rookie forward, Andrew Vermeulen’s assist marked the first point in his Ontario Hockey League career. The 2006-born forward has suited up in 20 games this year after he was selected out of the Niagara North Stars by the IceDogs in the 4th round of the 2022 OHL Priority selection.

The third period began with an early goal from the home team but 1:30 later, Declan Waddick set up Zakary Lavoie to go upstairs on the powerplay. Number 27 now has 27 on the season tied with Declan Waddick for the team lead. Minutes later, Daniel Michaud batted the puck out of the air to have a goal called on the ice but it was later overturned as it did not cross the goal line. The fourth and final IceDogs goal is credited to the rookie, Kevin He who beat Thornton up high as it trickled in behind him.

The final score read 11-4 in favour of the home team.
