The Niagara IceDogs are wrapping up 2019 with a 6:00 p.m. puck drop at home against the Peterborough Petes. The IceDogs and Petes are 7th and 3rd in the Eastern Conference, respectively. With a recent 5-4 loss to Erie on the road, the ‘Dogs are looking to capture a win and begin to move up the standings leading into the new year, and hand the Petes their 3rd consecutive loss.
IceDogs captain, Akil Thomas, and offensive forward, Kyen Sopa, are still away representing their respective countries at the 2020 World Junior Hockey Championship.
Peterborough will be without top scorer Nick Robertson, who is representing the United States.
The last time these two teams faced off, the IceDogs took advantage of an off night for Hunter Jones, one of the best goaltenders in the league. Leading the league with 21 wins, Jones’ goals against average is 2.60, third in the league, and his save percentage is .918.
IceDogs’ Oliver Castleman in currently on a 7 game point streak; in that time Castleman has collected 6 goals and 12 points. If he continues his point per game pace, Oliver will bypass his point total last season in only 41 games.
The IceDogs are also starting to get some consistent offense from their back end. In the last three games: Dakota Betts has 1 goal, 1 assist, and is +4; Mason Howard has 1 goal, 2 assists, and is +2; and Adrien Beraldo has 4 assists and is +3. The additional point production from the blueliners can make all the difference in close scoring games.
