Moving forward to 2020-21: A message from General Manager Joey Burke

Good afternoon IceDogs fans,

This has been a very uncertain and, let’s face it, scary time for us all.

While we all collectively navigated through the dangers that Covid-19 has presented, it seemed there was less and less to be excited about as the time slowly passed. The response from the Niagara Region during this pandemic has been extremely admirable. For the first time in months it seems we can finally see the bright future on the horizon, and can sense a return to normalcy approaching.

With that in mind the response from the Niagara IceDogs, as well as the OHL and CHL, will be impressive in its own right. Let me assure you, excitement is coming. As a community we will get back to normal, and there will be IceDogs hockey in 2020-21!

The CHL is working diligently on preparations and planning for the start of the 2020-21 OHL Season, and it absolutely remains our goal to drop the puck in the fall, and welcome our great fans of the Niagara Region back to IceDogs Hockey, as soon as it is safe and acceptable to do so.

On the ice there is a ton to be excited about. We are a team on the rise! We have made several exciting roster additions in the past months, and we can’t wait for you to see the result hit the ice in the fall.

Two key reasons for IceDogs fans to be excited about getting back to the rink are Pano Fimis and Danil Gushchin. Fimis, the highest draft selection in team history, has a natural ability that is extremely rare, and the pedigree to match. He has received every top honour in his age group this past season, while captaining and leading the number one team in Ontario to a championship. Fimis has an electric playing style that is very conducive to the way we play, and, fans, I know you are going to love him from Day One. Gushchin, the highest Import Draft selection in team history, recently committed to the IceDogs. He is a game changing talent that it is rare to be able to add through the draft, and even more rare to get to commit. Gushchin is rated to be selected in the first or second round of the upcoming NHL Draft and, quite frankly, is one of the most pure skilled 2002-born players in the world. He is an absolute delight to watch live, and will quickly become a fan favourite in Niagara. Combine these two game breaking talents with a strong returning young core, and the signing of our top 5 draft selections this past April, 2020-21 will prove to be an exciting season in IceDogs history; one you will want to be a part of.

Our draft cupboards are over stocked, our young talent is signed and committed, our injuries have healed, and we have never been more excited as an organization to return to play. We will turn the heads of the OHL and bring exciting IceDogs Hockey back to the great fans of the Niagara Region. Collectively we have all been through some very dark times in 2020, but the time for excitement is now. The worst is behind us and the future is bright. We cannot wait to share it with you.

See you at the Meridian Centre soon!
